You are participating in a succession process right now.
Whether you realize it or not, you are participating in a succession process right now.
Leadership changes are experienced in every ministry context. Every single one.
At some point, you will eventually step out of your role.
How are you preparing for this change?
Safeguarding organizational health is the task of leadership.
Changes in leadership are inevitable. Some of the time such change is foreseen. At other times it is not anticipated before being initiated. Once commenced, however, leadership changes are always disruptive to ministries and this disruption creates varying degrees of organizational instability.
Quite often changes at the leadership level are significant. These changes alter pre-existing relationships, and as relationships change, organizational processes and practices adapt, which, in turn, directly affect the health (and sustainability) of the ministry.
Safeguarding organizational health is the task of leadership.
Health is essential to advancing mission. Your charge, as a leader, is to fully exercise the available platform of influence afforded by your role to augment performance in pursuit of pre-determined outcomes, that is, the mission of the ministry.
Recognizing how significantly you influence the health of the ministry and that you will fulfill your role but for a season, you must understand that your leadership is a stewardship. It’s a trust. You have been positioned to provide influence for the benefit of another for a period of time.
A correct understanding of this term appointment confines your leadership to a context where responsibility and accountability are driving influences throughout your tenure.
Succeeding in succession starts long before—that’s right, long before—a change in leadership.
Whereas the circumstances of your leadership change cannot always be predicted, you need to help your ministry prepare.
It’s not too soon to start.
Succeeding in succession starts long before—that’s right, long before—a change in leadership. Proper succession planning is a crucial aspect of your leadership. Effectively employed, it can help you and your ministry mature to become who and what God is shaping them to be and to accomplish what God has called them to do.
